Is God an Alien?

Space Cosmic Fog View Wallpaper

“Why do we have to appease God?” asked one of my colleagues at the lunch table.

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“I mean if there is a God, is he so self obsessed that he needs to be appeased first!” he chuckled.

It wasn’t at all surprising to hear that argument coming from an atheist. But being agnostic myself, one who claim neither faith nor disbelief in God, I put forwarded my opinion.

“That’s where religion get’s interesting, buddy” I replied back.

“What do you mean?”

The person who had theorized the concept of religion was a really smart. Religion was introduced as a tool to unite people. Almost every ancient religion proposes that the creation of the universe and of living things is best explained by an intelligent cause or an intelligent omnipresent being. In this way an illusion of larger than life intelligent powerful image of an invisible super-power is created and passed onto newer generations. This was done to keep people in check. While most would listen to the church/temple/which is turn will preach the sermon from the king/ruler (let’s say). For those who still commit crimes, disrupt the harmony of the state etc, religion provided another powerful alternative: paap dhona (to wash away ones sins). While in Christianity, one can confess her sins to a padre; the Hindus prefer to take a dip in the Ganges or likewise.

The concept was bound to be a hit. It provided the ruler of the state to have control over his/her masses by imbibing the fear of God in them. And it was the best tool to foster unity.

But the problem arose out of worshiping the so called God. People started worshiping him and started thinking of ways to appease him. People started to consider God as a watchdog who flinches at the slightest of unethical or immoral act. Or worse still, the keeper of luck and destiny.

So appeasement of God is but a natural phenomenon, I explained.

“That’s alright. So, Tonmoy, you mean to say that there’s no God and the whole concept is actually a philosophy?” he asked looking at me.

I chewed on the salad hastily to clear out his doubt, “No, that’s not correct”

If there’s no God or Intelligent design, then what explains the concept called life? Theory of Evolution? Darwin theory? Natural selection? Survival of the fittest?

Probably yes & probably no.

Evolution:
Even Darwin, near the end of his life, said, “Not one change of species into another is on record… we cannot prove that a single species has been changed” (Source “My Life and Letters”, Volume 1)

Intelligent power/being or God:
If God created us and this earth/universe, is it believable that It/He/She caters to the prayers/thoughts/life of 6 billion human beings?
If It/He/She doesn’t care or cater to our prayers then why did It/He/She created us in the first place?

Intelligent being/ super power from space/advanced alien species:
This concept is similar to the God concept mentioned above, but here we don’t generally attach emotions to these beings. They might have inhabited our planet, played around with our DNAs, created a multitude of life forms, domesticated some animals & studied us for some time. And they left. They are least concerned about us. Or maybe they are watching us from above as a scientist looks at his lab mice! Probably. Or probably they simply stranded us.

I believe in the concept of Evolution and Intelligent Super power form space. And I don’t challenge the concept of God because who knows, God must be crazy enough to actually watch each one of us and listen to our prayers. And probably laugh at us.

So I’m happily AGNOSTIC.

Say what?

Hi Tonmoy, this is an interesting subject indeed as I’ve always wondered about the various possibilities that can be associated with the existence or non-existence of a supreme being watching over us all the time. Frankly, I haven’t yet taken a stand on this matter so far because I don’t quite have the facts. My views have always changed with times and are deeply rooted to my experiences in life…this is not an exception.
As a child, one day I set to wonder – “When did God think of creating this earth and the living beings?” – “Is God a single entity?”- “Since when has he/she existed?”- “Who created him/her?” ….and that’s when my thoughts ended in a loop.

Now, when I try to put together the ideas fed by my parents, society, religion and various intellectuals, I come to similar questions as addressed by your colleague “Do we need to please God or does he/she wants us to please him?” – “Do we need to pray when we are in need or so that we don’t offend him?” (which either makes us selfish or cowards) – “Do we even know whom are we following blindly?” – “Who are these wise men talking about dharma and categorizing what’s right and wrong?” (like you’ve mentioned – using religion as tool)…..

The questions are endless and yes, I still don’t have the facts to take a stand. But I do believe in the existence of a spirit (not necessarily God) but some external/exogenous force which comes in form through my thoughts or my conscience. I say so, because there have been times when my prayers have been answered and I’ve been taken by happy surprises…stuff close to miracles you can say. I like to believe they’re more than just mere coincidences and somehow it is a comforting feeling to think that there is a special guardian watching over me…It also makes it easier to share without having to make any efforts to communicate and being understood.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the subject. Your thoughts are profound and insightful. There are many people who share the similar faith: the faith in an external/exogenous spirit. Although it’s very hard for me to believe that that spirit can cater to 6 billion human souls(but just to make this discussion even more interesting, why do we never consider the animals, why knows, even they might pray? We are a so self obsessed race that we are always preoccupied with ourselves),it’s something that i don’t want to challenge but discuss. Who knows someday even I may need ITS help. ;)

Well, I can’t be sure if animals also pray.. but if at all so, I’m sure that their book of God will be totally different from that of ours. “Animal sacrifice” would be a STRICT NO in that case :P

The way the concept got created sounds just about correct. I would actually say our creation and evolution is all science that we haven’t fully understood yet and some genius ruler created ‘God’.
Watch the movie ‘The Invention of Lying’.
Excellent subject to post on. I remain atheist as long as there is no proof that God exists. I believe Man is God and therefore I appease only my own hunger for happiness. :D

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Abhishek.
You’re correct, even I believe that we have not yet fully solved all the mysteries of the universe and science. And as time goes by we shall discover newer truths and maybe someday we’ll be able to connect the missing links.
I believe the movie name is, ‘The invention of a lie’. I’ve seen it. Wonderful movie. :)
And I surely dig your explanation for remaining an atheist! Keep visiting.
